Subject:Intro Post! (Crossposted)
Time:10:22 pm
Hi everyone! I just started this brand new journal today & joined a bunch of communities that I've previously belonged to. I wanted to begin my fresh start with introducing myself in all the communities I belong to. Sorry if you see this more than once.

My name is Jess & I'm 18. I'm 5'6 and looking to lose about 12 pounds. I've lost 8-9 so far since the beginning of January. I'm looking to slowly lower my calories by -100 daily calories per week this month. That should bring me down to 1200 calories. I'm also just starting Couch to 5k this week. I'll be alternating that program with pilates & walking. I might also add my stationary bike back into the mix.

I'd love to start off this diary with some healthy friends, so please feel free to add me or read more about what my journal will be like here.

Thanks a lot & keep up the good work everyone!

Subject:Low carbs? Sign me up!

Diet book after diet book talks about how carbs are “bad” for you [at least bad carbs are bad for you], and how many people struggle with giving up their carbs.

You know what? I don’t LIKE pasta or bread. People stare at me like I have a third ear on my forehead when I say that. I’ll never understand why people like the taste of pasta. It tastes like nothing. Why do you like the spongy taste of bread? Why do you use it to soak up your sauces?

I can’t say, of course, that I don’t eat any carbs. Although I don’t really like rice either, I do eat fruit. And while beans offer protein, they are, essentially, a carb. I like sweet potatoes. I like regular potatoes [less than sweet potatoes, though]. I like vegetables. And yes, I eat pizza [only occasionally, though, ironically enough, I don’t like the dough].

You would think, considering what Atkins, South Beach, Sugar Busters, and everyone else say, that I would be remarkably thin. I am not. I am in the ‘healthy’ range of weight for my height [though, I’ve read numerous times that the makers of these weight ranges have increased them as people have gained weight, so maybe I’m not at a good weight]. I’m not entirely sure what my problem is. I’m guessing, it’s extra fat. I love cheese. I don’t always take the time to prepare my own meals, and thus, I end up eating fast food. While I don’t drink a lot [less than 3 drinks a week on average], I do enjoy beer. I don’t drink enough water. I love coffee. While I do enjoy exercising, I get sick A LOT, and I lose the consistency of regular workouts. I snack, even though it’s mostly healthy snack food, a lot. I have a tendency to graze in front of the computer and TV. I don’t even think I’m hungry when I eat a half can of olives at 10:30 pm at night.

I just view it as “just in case”.

I’m hoping that I can clean up my unruly eating habits and finally get to the weight that I want to be at, but at the very least, I’ll switch to low fat cheese.

I also only did two cardio workouts last week (oops!). But, I just finished my first strength workout of the week, and I'll probably go to a dance class later. Does anyone else have the nasty cold that's going around in CA? It seems like everyone I know (including myself) has it. It makes working out sooo much harder when you can't hardly breathe in the first place!

Have you ever heard of/read a book called "French Women Don't Get Fat," by Mireille Guiliano? I bought it at Waldenbooks yesterday and just started reading it (I think I'm up to page 6!) So far I really like the philosophy and premises of the book...which is focused on eating for pleasure and staying away from extremes. Eating your treats and fine food...but in moderation. I want to read it, even though I'm sure a lot of it will already be stuff I know deep down...because it seems very much like the way I was raised by my mother...who came to the U.S. from Europe, when she was 19, like I am now :) My mom has always been such a sensible eater when I have known her, but I remember seeing pictures of her when she first came to the U.S. (she gained weight over here initially). Then she just got fed up with that, and went back to her roots, and eating like she had back at home, and lost the weight she had gained. I know I write a lot about my mumsy...but she is my inspiration and role model :) I look up to her a lot...and just how active and healthy she is and how much of a priority she has placed on that. She doesn't believe in dieting, just in eating good food in moderation...homecooked meals, fresh fruit and veggies...and some chocolate for dessert. I know that my mom's got the key right there. Ok...It just kind of reminds me of me...coming to college in 2003 and gaining weight. Now this is the part of the story where I lose the 10lbs I gained :)

How is the Challenge going for everyone?

Has anyone else noticed the goofiness of the food diary??? You would think it would keep track of you eat from morning to night--breakfast at the top, lunch in the middle, dinner at the top, and snacks in-between. Mine certainly doesn't look that way!

Oh well....just a minor detail/bug that SELF can fix for next year!

This is a somewhat random, but I thought it might be kind of interesting and helpful to share some of our favorite workout music mixes. It really helps me to listen to music when I exercise but I always get stuck listening to the same songs over and over. My current running mix is totally random, but maybe someone else will be inspired by it.

Please share your favorite exercise music!

Hey! How are y'all doing so far? I'm feeling pretty good about this right now. I did one of my strength workouts yesterday and then last night my friend talked me into going to an african dance class for an hour. It was *really* intense so I counted that as one of my cardio workouts. And this morning my boyfriend and I went running/walking for 45 minutes. I think this is more exercise than I've gotten in about the last two months combined!

I had a chance to enter yesterday's workout into my fitness log online.

I did a 60-minute STRENGTH TRAINING class. Since I had to put it into a fitness category, I chose to put it down as vigorous WEIGHT TRAINING.

The fitness log decided to put this as 60 minutes of CARDIO! Can we say there are still a few flaws???

Oh well....I know what I did, and that's what's most important.
